Background of the study:
Workplace stress has emerged as a critical factor affecting mental health, particularly among healthcare workers who face high demands and emotional burdens in their daily roles. In Asaba Local Government Area, healthcare professionals contend with long working hours, understaffing, and high patient loads, which contribute to significant stress and burnout (Chukwu, 2023). This stress not only impairs personal well-being but also negatively impacts the quality of patient care. Evidence suggests that prolonged workplace stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders (Uche, 2024). Additionally, the lack of adequate mental health support systems within healthcare institutions exacerbates these challenges. This study investigates the extent to which workplace stress affects the mental health of healthcare workers in Asaba by analyzing survey data and conducting in-depth interviews. The findings aim to inform policy changes and the development of support programs that address mental health needs, thereby enhancing overall job satisfaction and performance in healthcare settings (Ibekwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem:
Healthcare workers in Asaba Local Government Area experience high levels of workplace stress, leading to significant mental health challenges. This stress, compounded by long hours and resource limitations, results in decreased job performance and personal well-being. Addressing these issues is essential to improve healthcare delivery and staff welfare (Okoro, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
1. To assess the prevalence of workplace stress among healthcare workers.
2. To evaluate the impact of stress on mental health outcomes.
3. To recommend strategies for stress reduction and mental health support.
Research questions:
1. What is the level of workplace stress among healthcare workers in Asaba?
2. How does workplace stress affect their mental health?
3. What interventions can reduce stress and improve mental health?
Research Hypotheses:
1. High workplace stress is significantly associated with poor mental health among healthcare workers.
2. There is a positive relationship between stress levels and burnout.
3. Implementing stress management programs will improve mental health outcomes.
Significance of the study:
This study provides valuable insights into the effects of workplace stress on healthcare workers’ mental health, offering recommendations that can enhance employee well-being and improve the quality of healthcare services in Asaba (Ekwueme, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating the effect of workplace stress on the mental health of healthcare workers in Asaba Local Government Area, focusing solely on local healthcare institutions and staff experiences.
Definitions of terms:
